Once long ago, there lived a young man named Xehanort. He was fascinated by the sciences, and he quite enjoyed working in them. However, he had no qualms with being inhumane as it meant the results were more on-target. This made people angry at him, and so he moved from place to place to stay alive. This lasted a good while, but eventually, the well at his home was poisoned and he died. A young Reaper arrived to sever the chain and devour him, for he was a terrible person the likes of which such a fate was reserved for. He offered the Reaper one last cup of tea before accepting his fate, and so was able to steal the scythe, forcing his hand. With the chain between his flesh and soul severed and fashioned into his own scythe, Xehanort became a Reaper himself.

From then on, he took the name of Ansem after a philosopher he had admired. As a Reaper, he used his abilities to meet the man, and was sorely disappointed to find the man he looked up to wasn't like him at all, but instead a gentle old soul who did not condone inhumane experiments. In his rage, he killed the wise man and devoured his soul--a taboo. When he realized this made him more powerful, he began to devour many souls. By the time this was realized, he was too powerful to take down and became the means of disposal for other troublesome Reapers.
